Heatherwick\u2019s Humanise book: \u2018A visual and textual bludgeoning\u2019<\/a><\/h4><\/div><\/div>\n

Practice founder Thomas Heatherwick set out his Humanise<\/a> \u2018anti-boring-building\u2019 campaign last year, in his book Humanise: A Maker\u2019s Guide to Building Our World<\/i><\/p>\n

Loughborough\u2019s architecture school is working with Heatherwick\u2019s practice to develop the new MA programme, set to launch in autumn 2025. It will include lectures and workshops exploring \u2018the idea of emotion as a function of design\u2019 and learning how to create \u2018joyful\u2019 buildings.<\/p>\n

Abigail Scott Paul, global head of the Humanise campaign, said in a statement that the master\u2019s programme would be \u2018a game-changer in our quest to create buildings that better serve people and the planet\u2019, following the launch last year of the crusade against what Heatherwick called the \u2018global catastrophe\u2019 of uninspiring buildings.<\/p>\n

\u2018Loughborough has always been a pioneer and this new course is symbolic of a sea change in architectural education,\u2019 she said. \u2018[The course] will challenge the rigidity and over-specialisation of so much teaching in the past and nurture a new generation of architects.\u2019<\/p>\n

In March, Loughborough academics joined forces with Humanise for a research symposium looking at how the outside of buildings impacts on people\u2019s health, emotions and behaviour. The event involved both the architecture and neuroscience fields.<\/p>\n

Loughborough was named last year<\/a> as the best architecture school nationally by The Good University Guide<\/a>\u00a0from\u00a0The Times<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0The Sunday Times,<\/em> beating Cambridge and Cardiff to the top.<\/p>\n

Robert Schmidt, of Loughborough School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering, said: \u2018This shared belief in making, and collaborating with creatives, builds on LU-Arc\u2019s established ethos of \u2018architect-maker\u2019.<\/p>\n

He added: \u2018Together with our research expertise at the intersection of architecture and psychology, it perfectly complements the Humanise agenda. I think this initiative will benefit our students tremendously, opening up access to broader approaches and practical opportunities.\u2019<\/p>\n

Heatherwick Studio says more than 6,000 copies of the\u00a0 Humanise<\/em> part-book-part-manifesto have been sold to date. However, his arguments also came in for criticism.<\/p>\n

Writing for the AJ, Catherine Slessor<\/a> summarised the Heatherwick\u2019s manifesto as \u2018dumbed-down arguments, chippy, chummy scorn for \u2018experts\u2019, fatuous rallying calls and vague intimations of better times ahead\u2019 saying the book felt \u2018 like just another piece of judicious self-promotion\u2019.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
