{"id":740338,"date":"2024-05-13T09:01:38","date_gmt":"2024-05-13T08:01:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=740338"},"modified":"2024-05-13T09:59:35","modified_gmt":"2024-05-13T08:59:35","slug":"zha-triumphs-in-riga-cruise-terminal-contest","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/zha-triumphs-in-riga-cruise-terminal-contest","title":{"rendered":"ZHA triumphs in Riga cruise terminal contest"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The open international competition, organised by the Latvian Association of Architects on behalf of <a href=\"https:\/\/ropax.lv\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Riga Ropax Terminal<\/a>, sought proposals for a passenger and roll-on\/roll-off cargo terminal on a waterfront site close to the city centre.<\/p>\n<p>The winning scheme retrofits an old 1960s shipping storage facility on the right bank of the Daugava River into a 20,000m\u00b2 terminal capable of handling around 150 cruise ships, 360 passenger ferries and 180 ro-ro ships a year.<\/p>\n<p>The \u20ac97 million project will deliver a new \u2018modern and sustainable\u2019 facility that will allow the Latvian capital to double the number of cruise ships arriving every year while reducing congestion and pollution in Riga\u2019s historic centre.<\/p>\n<p>According to the competition brief: \u2018[The] new passenger terminal would put Riga on the map of European cruise ports, provide modern and environmentally friendly ferry passenger services in Riga, and create new opportunities for developing the ro-ro cargo segment.&#8217;<\/p>\n<p>The new terminal sits in the southern part of the Exportosta area. ZHA plans to add a fourth level to the 64-year-old reinforced concrete structure as well as a triple-height \u2018grand hall\u2019 for arriving and departing passengers. The additions will be made using timber sourced from certified sustainable local forests.<\/p>\n<p>Vertical external fins for solar shading will be built from locally recycled bricks. The terminal will also have a wide roof canopy extending beyond the building envelope to shelter visitors in the terrace caf\u00e9s and restaurants and passengers using the public transport concourse.<\/p>\n<p>Riga\u2019s 438ha historic centre features many Baroque and Art Nouveau structures. The masterplan creates a welcoming civic plaza facing the city and a new landscaped riverside walkway that provides Riga\u2019s residents and visitors with a variety of waterfront gardens and plazas for recreation and relaxation.<\/p>\n<p>The new Riga Ropax Terminal will serve as one of the city\u2019s three transport hubs, while also providing high-quality civic, leisure and commercial facilities. One of the objectives of Riga Ropax Terminal will be to become a home port for cruise ships. The terminal will include additional infrastructure for cruise ship servicing, with the prospect of a cruise line home port incorporating restaurants and caf\u00e9s available to the residents of the neighbourhood with sound and air pollution reduced in the city centre and safe movement ensured.<\/p>\n<p>Future estimates show that the new terminal could accommodate up to 150 cruise ships together with 540 ships per year in the passenger and cargo segments \u2013 360 ferry ships and 180 ro-ro ships.
