{"id":739374,"date":"2024-05-01T20:01:58","date_gmt":"2024-05-01T19:01:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=739374"},"modified":"2024-05-17T11:57:23","modified_gmt":"2024-05-17T10:57:23","slug":"hayatsu-architects-wins-2024-aj-small-projects-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/hayatsu-architects-wins-2024-aj-small-projects-award","title":{"rendered":"Hayatsu Architects wins 2024 AJ Small Projects Award"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The AJ\u2019s \u2018best in low-cost design\u2019 project prize was awarded to The Farmer\u2019s Arms Cold Food Store, which was built on the side of a former pub in the Lake District for a local arts organisation specialising in crafts.<\/p>\n<p>Constructed as part of an annual building school at which international participants learned and exchanged craft skills, t<span class=\"s1\">he structure\u2019s design adapts traditional Japanese storage building typologies with locally sourced materials. It also used traditional Japanese <i>shikkui<\/i> plaster.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The panel was impressed with the \u2018cultural exchange\u2019 presented by the project, which judges noted could only have been delivered by a Japanese architect working in the particular UK setting. Judges also acknowledged the embrace of the project by the Grizedale Arts charity and the local community.<\/p>\n<div class=\"content-wrap\">\n<div id=\"wrapper_sleeve\" class=\"content-inner-wrap full-width\">\n<div class=\"content container\">\n<article class=\"post-listing post-696527 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-news tag-aj-small-projects-2023 tag-caukin-studio editorial-aj-small-projects editorial-homepage-news editorial-news\">\n<div class=\"post-inner\">\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p>Artefact\u2019s Triangle House project received the Highly Commended award for an extension to a 20th century house in Surrey. Judges said the scheme delivered a message about residential extensions needed in the years to come to post war housing.<\/p>\n<p>The Sustainability Prize was awarded to Topo Architects for The NewBridge Project, which the judges championed for setting a precedent for reuse, despite a scarcity of materials.<\/p>\n<p>Judges said the scheme, a retrofit of a five-storey former office building in Newcastle for a local arts charity working with young people, set an example by avoiding demolition, given demands to bulldoze similar office buildings in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Commonbond Architects took the People\u2019s Choice Award, for its Gardenhide Studio, winning nearly 25 per cent out of the votes received from AJ readers in an online poll. Nearly 1,600 votes were received this year.<\/p>\n<p>The \u00a322,000 project is a self-built hempcrete architecture studio in south-east London, designed by and for emerging studio Commonbond Architects. It was designed partly as a test bed for using a breathable biocircular building material, as well as creating a garden studio that felt permanently embedded in the garden.<\/p>\n<p>Now in its 29th year, the AJ Small Projects Award celebrates architecture and structures realised on a smaller scale, this year with a maximum budget of \u00a3350,000.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Small Projects provides a showcase of the best in low-cost design from the best designers. Previous winners include Rashid Ali Architects, Carmody Groarke, Haworth Tompkins, Hawkins\\Brown, David Leech Architects, Kate Darby Architects and Mole Architects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>This year nearly 150 entries were received. Those shortlisted<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0range from a tiny woodland sauna and city benches to community hubs and both retrofitted and newly built whole houses. And, as always, there are beautiful domestic extensions formed out of rich material palettes to give longevity to the homes they were built for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"s1\">The 20 shortlisted practices presented their projects to a panel of distinguished judges on 1 May. The panel consisted of returning judges Esther Everett, head of design at the London Legacy Development Corporation; Pedro Gil, director at Studio Gil; and Fiona Scott, director at Gort Scott. They were joined by Chris Upson of OGU Architects, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/winners-of-aj-small-projects-2023-announced\">winner with MMAS Architects of last year\u2019s award for the Adelaide Street scheme in Belfas<\/a>t.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">The judging was followed by a celebration, when the winners of the overall award, Sustainability Prize and People\u2019s Choice award were announced.
