{"id":738272,"date":"2024-04-25T10:38:15","date_gmt":"2024-04-25T09:38:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=738272"},"modified":"2024-04-30T10:39:15","modified_gmt":"2024-04-30T09:39:15","slug":"think-big-and-embrace-the-small","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/opinion\/think-big-and-embrace-the-small","title":{"rendered":"Think big and embrace the small"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">It has been quite some task to whittle the myriad entries down to a longlist of just 20 \u2013 and all credit to our architecture editors Fran Williams and Rob Wilson, who led on this with aplomb.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">As Fran explains in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/digital-edition\/aj-25-04-24-small-projects\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">her introduction<\/a>, these schemes demonstrate what can really make a small project sing: it\u2019s about material choices, attention to detail and a good understanding of the social and environmental issues within each site-specific context.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">From community hubs, to city benches, to carefully crafted domestic extensions: \u2018these schemes may have been designed on a budget,\u2019 Fran writes, \u2018but they give back, to the communities and sites that they have been created for.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Tight budgets might be particularly evident within the smallest of projects \u2013 but they crystallise a wider issue facing the profession. Budgetary pressures bear down like never before, and architects are having to be increasingly nimble and creative in their approaches.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">These pressures also face those who have \u2018jumped the fence\u2019 to go client-side. In our inspiring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/client-side-careers-architects-who-jumped-the-fence\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">news feature<\/a> (by Richard Waite and Anna Highfield) we hear in-depth about four career-changing journeys \u2013 and how many of our interviewees have found new opportunities from constraints.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">\u2018It\u2019s such a shift in mindset,\u2019 says Charlie Caswell of design-led development company Caswell&amp;Dainow. \u2018You have got to be patient, and there\u2019s luck and skill and networking involved.\u2019 However, he adds: \u2018As long as you can put a planning application together \u2026 there are some tiny pockets of land in London that, if you\u2019re really clever, do work.\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">So \u2026 embrace the small!
