Our four-storey workspace building is compact but maintains an assertive presence on a prominent corner location. It sits alongside Gateway Central, designed by Allies and Morrison, which led the masterplan of the wider Gateway site.

Gateway West mediates between two distinct urban contexts. While it was born of White City Place, an emerging and evolving creative campus mostly articulated in metal and glass, its sculpted masonry façades draw inspiration from nearby mid-20th century residential blocks. The splayed entrance façade overlooks a new central landscape, creating a characterful focal point. As well as providing healthy and attractive work spaces, Gateway West also fulfils a wider civic role, with a compact ‘kiosk’ space on a key street corner designed as an affordable community space.

Gateway West has been certified BREEAM Outstanding. A comprehensive sustainability strategy incorporates passive design principles (including high thermal performance façades and natural ventilation) with a rooftop PV array and low-energy heating and cooling to reduce operational carbon. A green roof supports local biodiversity and alleviates surface run-off. Servicing is combined with Gateway Central in order to minimise vehicle movements and maximise the public realm.
Jay Gort, director, Gort Scott

<div tactile character. Materials were chosen for their relationship to the existing context and with durability in mind. Mottled colours of brick were selected, with an irregular texture, articulated in a rich mix of brick bonds, which lends a muted complexity to each elevation. Precast concrete elements such as sills, corbels and copings have been cast with a dark pigment and coloured aggregate to complement brickwork tones. A deep red satin finish to glazed terracotta elements and powder-coated metalwork to windows and doors, complement the ensemble.
Dominic Dudley, architect, Gort Scott

Specification

While it is modern in its premise, Gateway West has been handcrafted in its delivery. The building’s monolithic solidity viewed from a distance becomes more intriguing on closer inspection, with irregular layered planes and a variety of brick bonds breaking up the mass. The building has been conceived like a rock or keep, with a heavy, grounded base rising through a middle wall with punched openings towards a more open set of castellated brick piers at the top.

The large circular windows reference Louis Kahn’s Indian Institute of Management in Ahmadabad and are set within asymmetric gables with muted flourishes. Rich planting around the base is a critical element of the scheme: it works to bring the assembly together while softening the building’s presence and helps to frame a new green pedestrian route.

Long life, loose fit principles have driven our design, creating a building that is flexible, adaptable and sustainable. The open floor plates can be easily subdivided to meet the needs of single or multiple occupants, thanks to an efficient and lean concrete frame, and elements such as balustrades and plant enclosure can be readily disassembled if necessary.

Exposed services make for easier maintenance and contribute to the building’s strong industrial aesthetic.
Dominic Dudley, architect, Gort Scott

Selected products

Brickwork
ABC Klinker
Föhr Lava
Envelope
abc-klinker.de

Pigmented precast concrete
Evans Concrete
Bespoke precast mix with dark blue pigment, red aggregate, polished and acid-etched finishes
Envelope cladding, sills, corbels, copings
evansconcrete.co.uk

Terracotta
NBK
Terrart Shingle glazed RAL 3007
Second and third floors
nbkterracotta.com

Windows
Kawneer
PPC finish Interpon D2525, RAL 3007 Satin; Glazing Guardian Extra Clear SNX 60, SN 75
All floors
kawneer.de

Curtain walling
Kawneer
PPC Finish Interpon D2525 RAL 3007 Satin; Glazing Guardian Extra Clear SNX 60, SN 75
Ground floor main entrance, kiosk
Upper floor circular windows
kawneer.de

Gateway West is part of an ambitious redevelopment programme that is transforming White City into a creative industries hub.
