Smooth wire-cut bricks at ground floor form a flush base. Bricks step back from the pavement one brick at a time; elsewhere, a perforated stack bond allows light to a bathroom behind, evoking rustication. Above, a textured brick contrasts with the smooth, sharp base.

Adjacent to the entrance, a dark green marble panel combines with the brickwork bonding to create a generous elevation, lending this private house a more public, civic character.

A small number of structural concrete beams allow wide openings to gardens and make for flexibility internally. The ground floor has exposed painted brickwork. Above, the house is timber-framed, with a brickwork outer leaf.

All timber spans were determined to avoid the inclusion of steelwork. Other apparently concrete elements are fabricated using 6mm cement panels on timber framing, lending a visual, if not physical, weight.

Internally, wherever possible, self-finished materials are employed, avoiding high-embodied-carbon plastering of walls. Similarly, common spruce panels are used to create many of the fittings and joinery. They are oiled, not painted, and fixed such that they can be adjusted with ease over time.
Will Burges, director, 31/44 Architects

Selected products

Ground floor bricks
Wienerberger
Staffordshire Smooth Brown
Walls
wienerberger.com

First floor bricks
Furness Brick & Tile Co.
Tudor Black
Walls
furnessbrick.co.uk

Roofing tiles
BMI Redland
Rosemary Clay Classic
Roof
bmigroup.com

Floor tiles
Ketley
Light Multi
Hall, hearths and external
ketley-brick.co.uk

Precast concrete lintels
Cambridge Architectural Precast
Natural
cap-ltd.co.uk

Cement board cladding
Cembrit
Cembrit HD Swisspearl
Roof edge cladding
swisspearl.com

Windows
Idealcombi
Futura +i
idealcombi.com

Sliding doors
Reynaers Aluminium
CP155
reynaersathome.co.uk

Timber panelling
Tilly
Spruce three-layer wood panel
Interior joinery and kitchen
tilly.at

Six Columns delivers over 160m2 of accommodation over three floors in a largely two-storey south London street.
