{"id":737580,"date":"2024-04-15T10:49:34","date_gmt":"2024-04-15T09:49:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=737580"},"modified":"2024-04-16T08:46:46","modified_gmt":"2024-04-16T07:46:46","slug":"heatherwick-studios-vessel-to-reopen-with-safety-meshing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/heatherwick-studios-vessel-to-reopen-with-safety-meshing","title":{"rendered":"Heatherwick Studio\u2019s Vessel to reopen with safety meshing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/buildings\/step-up-heatherwick-studio-completes-vessel-in-new-york\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">16-storey structure<\/a> has been closed since 2021 after several people jumped off the \u00a3200 million landmark at Hudson Yards, a development in Manhattan, after it opened in 2019.<\/p>\n<p>Now, Related Companies, the developer for Hudson Yards has confirmed that the Vessel will reopen later this year once &#8216;floor-to-ceiling steel mesh&#8217; has been installed, as <em>The New York Times<\/em> and <em>New York Post<\/em> reported.<\/p>\n<p>The AJ understands that about half of the structure\u2019s walkways, or four of the Vessel\u2019s stairwells and adjoining platforms, will have the steel netting installed. Levels one and two will open while the top level will remain permanently closed.<\/p>\n<p>Practice founder Thomas Heatherwick has been working on proposals for the steel meshing with Related.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released to the US press, a spokesperson for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hudsonyardsnewyork.com\/press-media\/press-releases\">Hudson Yards<\/a> with Heatherwick and Related said: \u2018Through a closely coordinated effort with Thomas Heatherwick and Heatherwick Studio, we have developed a plan to install floor-to-ceiling steel mesh on Vessel while also preserving the unique experience that has drawn millions of visitors from around the globe.\u2019<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/heatherwick-studios-distraught-as-ny-attraction-closes-after-fourth-suicide\">In 2021<\/a> Heatherwick&#8217;s practice told the AJ it was \u2018distraught\u2019 after a fourth person killed themselves by jumping off the Vessel, forcing its closure.<\/p>\n<p>The studio said at the time that the team had \u2018exhaustively explored physical solutions to increase safety\u2019 and that those required \u2018further rigorous tests\u2019 to \u2018identify a solution that is feasible in terms of engineering and installation\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The AJ understands that Heatherwick Studio had proposed safety barriers before the building was built, but the plans were never implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Ross, the billionaire chairman of developer Related, which runs the attraction, told an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thedailybeast.com\/billionaire-developer-stephen-ross-mulls-closing-nyc-hot-spot-the-vessel-after-14-year-old-leaps-to-his-death\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">American news website<\/a> in 2021 that he was considering never reopening the Vessel, saying: \u2018We thought we did everything that would really prevent this.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Further safety measures had been introduced following the Vessel&#8217;s opening. These restricted entry so only groups of two or more people could visit the attraction as well as increasing security and \u2018screening\u2019 visitors.<\/p>\n<p>The first death at the Vessel was a 19-year-old man, who jumped off a platform in February 2019, before the structure was officially opened.
