An unveiling event in Osaka last week (8 March) was attended by the UK ambassador to Japan, Julia Longbottom, and Osaka mayor Hideyuki Yokoyama following a \u00a324 million competition<\/a> launched last June for a pavilion design.<\/p>\n

The King\u2019s Cross-based<\/a> practice says the UK pavilion, designed around the theme \u2018Come Build the Future\u2019, will be fully dismantlable following the event.<\/p>\n

All the main elements of the 10 x 10m pavilion \u2013 including the structure, floor plates and external cladding \u2014 have been designed to be relocatable with minimum transportation in mind, Woo and ES Global say.<\/p>\n

The pavilion is also designed to be low in energy consumption with a flat roof which is adaptable for solar or wind power generation depending on the location \u2013 either in Osaka or when it is rebuilt elsewhere.<\/p>\n

ES Global co-chief executive Olly Watts said: \u2018We are really excited to bring a new product to the Japanese market and see many future applications of this system in Japan, a country which has long embraced modular construction.<\/p>\n

\u2018The construction industry in Japan is going through a period of change at this very moment, and we are convinced that this global modular system will lead to solutions for addressing some of the infrastructure needs of the future.\u2019<\/p>\n

ES Global’s role in the 2025 pavilion follows the successful delivery of six venues for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The contractor says the same ‘kit of parts’ used at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games will, meanwhile, be used in Osaka for the UK pavilion, alongside new parts.<\/p>\n

Previous UK pavilions for World Expos include Heatherwick Studio, Wolfgang Buttress and BDP\u2019s UK pavilion at the 2015 Milan Expo<\/a>, which was awarded the event\u2019s \u2018best in show\u2019 prize.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
