The Clapton Commons charity, rooted in the ancient tradition of common land and the concept of the common good was created to address the lack of community spaces in Stamford Hill, building a network of local people that participate in the production and management of spaces for people to come together. Clapton Commons joined forces with Artefact to transform the disused undercroft of St Thomas\u2019 Church into an uplifting place for all.<\/p>\n

The design aims to encourage unexpected encounters through its spatial planning, and to forge a new identity for Clapton Commons through the character of the architecture. The dining room is located at the heart of the scheme, where the community comes together to cook and break bread.<\/p>\n

Other spaces revolve around it, ensuring different users rub shoulders when circulating through the building. The rhythmic partitions create a colourful backdrop, with everyday materials elevated through careful detailing. A continuous clerestory ensures light permeates between rooms as activity spills from one space to another.<\/p>\n

Crowdfunded with support from the GLA, Hackney Council and The Clothworker\u2019s Foundation, The Common Rooms is a model for low-cost, high-quality community infrastructure, delivered by the community for the common good.

Architect\u2019s choices<\/h3>\n

Strategically, we invested a significant portion of the budget in good-quality light fittings and a commercial kitchen, as both were key to the functionality of the space. Painted finishes to the partitions and floor ensured a cheap and simple solution without compromising on the appearance. Wood wool panels provided a textured background with good acoustic properties. Cost-effective polycarbonate panels were specified over glass, ensuring light would spill across the spaces. A laminated door blank provided a robust and colourful worktop for the servery.

Specification<\/h3>\n

The Common Rooms were erected from cost-effective materials, carefully detailed to ensure the space feels bespoke.<\/p>\n

Bold new signage draws visitors from the street into a mature garden, where a new entrance door with a distinctive colour palette leads into The Common Rooms.<\/p>\n

Partitions were constructed from off-the-shelf timber sections, with polycarbonate clerestory windows, their detail and rhythm echoing the design of the garden room in the church above. The setting-out of the partitions is designed around off-the-shelf dimensions of the infill wood wool panels to reduce waste and labour costs. The infill panels help to absorb sound across the large spaces and the joyful colour palette helps to enliven the undercroft, which has limited daylight.<\/p>\n

A bold blue column with expressed copper piping in the centre of the space creates a moment of curiosity, as it supports the baptism font in the church above.<\/p>\n

The servery projects from the kitchen into the dining room, celebrating the moment food is served and creating a focal point within the space.<\/p>\n

The existing floor was mended and simply painted in a deep blue hue, with a glossy finish that creates watery reflections on the ground.
