{"id":726772,"date":"2024-01-17T10:50:32","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T10:50:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/?p=726772"},"modified":"2024-01-17T12:32:29","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T12:32:29","slug":"odonnellbrown-submits-plans-for-major-glasgow-docks-housing-scheme","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.architectsjournal.co.uk\/news\/odonnellbrown-submits-plans-for-major-glasgow-docks-housing-scheme","title":{"rendered":"O&#8217;DonnellBrown submits plans for major Glasgow docks housing scheme"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Glasgow-based practice submitted plans last month to build 304 new homes on the southern boundary of the 8.9ha riverside site around the Grade A-listed, 19th-century graving docks in Govan, in the city\u2019s west.<\/p>\n<p>Several new buildings feature in O&#8217;DonnellBrown&#8217;s proposals for the derelict 3.35ha site approximately 2.5 miles south-west of Glasgow city centre. This includes five new buildings around four-and-five storeys tall near Dock No 3 and two buildings at 12-storeys and another on Govan Road at 10-storeys near Dock No 2.<\/p>\n<p>Under the proposals, for developer New City Vision, 80 per cent of overall site footprint will be transferred to community ownership once the scheme is completed, pending approval from Glasgow City Council.<\/p>\n<p>O&#8217;DonnellBrown&#8217;s masterplan will eventually extend the community of Govan toward the river and the Zaha Hadid Architects&#8217; Riverside Museum, which will soon be linked by a Jacobs-designed pedestrian bridge currently being installed.<\/p>\n<p>Plans to turn Dock No 1 into a working site for historic ship repair are already underway, with future phases of the masterplan set to bring landscaping and a unique heritage park to the former docks.<\/p>\n<p>Site location:<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/embed?pb=!1m18!1m12!1m3!1d3416.981027718999!2d-4.303209223665396!3d55.8606911298108!2m3!1f0!2f0!3f0!3m2!1i1024!2i768!4f13.1!3m3!1m2!1s0x4888455aed4862a9%3A0x5bda84e3dfbc7499!2sGovan%20Graving%20Docks!5e1!3m2!1sen!2suk!4v1705484870942!5m2!1sen!2suk\" width=\"600\" height=\"450\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Restoration and repair work to the Pumphouse \u2013 the sole remaining building on the site \u2013 is ongoing after listed building consent was secured in January 2023. The building will become a visitor and community attraction at Dock No 1, facing the Clyde, designed by O\u2019DonnellBrown.<\/p>\n<p>Jennifer O&#8217;Donnell, co founder and director of O&#8217;DonnellBrown, said: &#8216;This is a major milestone for the project team, for Govan and for Glasgow. The planning submission is one phase of a wider site vision which is the culmination of years of engagement, conversations, debate and technical work on a highly complex and important heritage site.<\/p>\n<p>&#8216;We are excited to reach this milestone at the beginning of 2024. This year we\u2019ll be starting the engagement with local community groups for vacant and derelict land funded public open space project, which will be the first phase of the site wide vision to be brought forward&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p>New City Vision chairman Harry O\u2019Donnell, said: \u2018<span class=\"TextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\">Taking up just 20 per cent of the overall site footprint, these plans have been sensitively designed to complement our vision, e<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\">nsuring development of a new and dynamic space fit for the 21<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun Superscript SCXW71160297 BCX0\" data-fontsize=\"11\">st<\/span><\/span><span class=\"TextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\" lang=\"EN-GB\" xml:lang=\"EN-GB\" data-contrast=\"auto\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\"> century while also<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\"> increasing supply of much<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\">&#8211;<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW71160297 BCX0\">needed new homes.\u2019<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Govan\u2019s graving docks were built in the late 19th century for repairing some of the biggest steamer ships in the world. They closed in 1987. The site has more recently been used temporarily and earmarked for housing under Glasgow City Council&#8217;s Development Plan.<\/p>\n<p>A decision on the scheme is expected this spring on the scheme. It will come six years after Glasgow City Council refused proposals by ZM Architects for homes, office space, a hotel and a museum on the site.<\/p>\n<p>Planning officers said that that development \u2018failed to preserve the special architectural and historic interest\u2019 of the site through several tall buildings earmarked for the waterfront.<\/p>\n<div
