Hopkins, who co-founded Hopkins Architects along with her husband, Michael Hopkins, in 1976, was awarded the honour for services to architecture.<\/p>\n

Patty and Michael Hopkins were among the early pioneers of High-Tech. The couple were jointly awarded the RIBA Gold Medal for Architecture in 1994 for their design work with \u2018an equal appeal to ordinary people and to architects\u2019.<\/p>\n

Audley English, co-founder of the Society of Black Architects, was made MBE for his services to architecture and sustainability. Other honours included Create Streets founder and government design advisor Nicholas Boys Smith<\/a>, who was made MBE for services to planning and design, and placemaking champion Pat Brown<\/a>, who was made MBE for services to the built environment.<\/p>\n

English graduated from the Architectural Association to become the UK\u2019s first West Indian architect and went on to found the first Black-led architectural practice to design innovative social housing and sustainability schemes.<\/p>\n

His practice prompted the first use of construction management contracts for social housing<\/a>\u00a0and pioneered modular housing design with its 2000 Newham scheme.<\/p>\n

English said he was \u2018deeply touched and honoured\u2019 by the \u2018unexpected\u2019 accolade, adding: \u2018It holds special significance to be included in this New Year Honours alongside fellow architect Patty Hopkins, given that we both received our training at the AA.\u2019<\/p>\n

English continued: \u2018I dedicate this MBE to my late mother, a first-generation Windrush migrant who aspired to provide her children with a better life. She instilled in us the mantra \u201cBelieve in yourself and never give up\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018My personal challenge persists with this substantial task but I aspire to continue to bring change within the challenged construction sector.<\/p>\n

\u2018This industry has been resistant to change through the adoption of Modern Methods of Construction solutions at scale, and I aim to [change that] with the right partners.\u2019<\/p>\n

Frances Mary Sorrell (Lady Sorrell), co-founder of the Sorrell Foundation, was also awarded a CBE<\/a> for her services to design and the creative industries.<\/p>\n

Lady Sorrell set up the foundation in 1999 alongside her husband and former CABE chair John Sorrell to inspire creativity in young people. From 2007 to 2010 the foundation collaborated with the RIBA on the RIBA Sorrell Foundation Schools Award to help raise design standards for schools.<\/p>\n

And painter and architectural artist Brian Clarke was knighted. Clarke is known for his large-scale stained glass and mosaic projects, set designs, and high profile collaborations with architects.
